Three towers · one rooftop park

Marina Bay Sands

Moshe Safdie's three 55-storey towers are joined at the top by one long deck, and that deck — the SkyPark, with its observation platform, gardens and the guest-only infinity pool — is the reason most people book. Rooms are generous, and the higher floors face either the bay and the city or the gardens behind.

At street level the complex works as a small district: a canal-side mall, a convention centre, two theatres, a long list of restaurants and the lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum on the water. A gaming floor sits in the podium as one facility among many. Gardens by the Bay is a footbridge away, and the business district faces you across the bay.

Best forA first visit, when you want the skyline from above and the waterfront at street level.

Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo

The Hôtel de Paris was built in 1864 to give the new casino across the square a hotel worthy of its guests, and the two buildings still face each other as a single composition. A four-year renovation completed in 2019 rebuilt the rooms and added a rooftop wing, while the lobby, the Bar Américain and the Belle Époque façade were kept as they were.

Dining is the main event — Le Louis XV by Alain Ducasse on the ground floor, and a rooftop grill that opens its roof in summer. Guests reach the Thermes Marins spa through an internal passage. Charles Garnier's casino is a thirty-second walk across the square; its gaming rooms are one part of what the square offers rather than the reason to stay.

Wynn Palace

Arrival is the set piece: gondolas carry guests in a slow loop over an eight-acre lake while fountains run below, and the atrium inside is filled with floral sculptures rebuilt every season. The public spaces hold a genuine collection of art and antiques rather than generic decoration.

Rooms are among the largest in the area, most with floor-to-ceiling windows over the lake. Restaurants range from Cantonese to European, and there is a spa and a retail arcade. The gaming floor sits on the main level; the neighbouring resorts are within walking distance.

Bellagio

Opened in 1998 and loosely modelled on a lakeside Italian village, the Bellagio is still the property most people picture first. The fountain shows on the front lake run through the afternoon and evening and are free to watch from the pavement.

Inside, the lobby ceiling is a field of around two thousand glass flowers by Dale Chihuly, and the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens beside it is replanted for every season. Cirque du Soleil's water show "O" has its own theatre on site. The gaming floor is large; the pools, gardens and restaurants are what make the stay.

Atlantis Paradise Island

Atlantis is less one hotel than a group of them on Paradise Island, over the bridge from Nassau: the Royal Towers joined by their arch, the Coral and the Reef, and the quieter Cove. Standards and prices differ a lot between towers, so it pays to check which one you are booking.

Between them sits the reason families come — the Aquaventure water park, open-air marine habitats with rays, sharks and reef fish, a marina and a long beach. The casino occupies the central building and is easy to avoid entirely.

The Palace of the Lost City

Sun City lies in the bushveld a couple of hours north-west of Johannesburg, and the Palace is its flagship — a domed, richly carved building from 1992, built around an invented legend of a lost kingdom. Whether that reads as grand or as theatre depends on the guest, but the craftsmanship inside is real.

The resort around it holds two golf courses, the Valley of Waves wave pool and sand beach, a spa and several hotels at lower price points, with a gaming floor in the entertainment centre. The true neighbour is Pilanesberg National Park, set in the crater of an extinct volcano just outside the gate.

Crown Towers stands on Southbank beside the Yarra River and is the tallest and quietest of the three hotels in the complex. Rooms face either the river and the city grid beyond or back over the bay — the river side is the one to ask for.

Below sits a long promenade of restaurants and shops, cinemas and event spaces, with the gaming floor on the main level. The city centre is two minutes away over a footbridge, and the botanic gardens, arts precinct and cricket ground are all close.

An hour from Kuala Lumpur, the road climbs into the hills and the air cools by ten degrees or more. Resorts World sits at roughly 1,800 metres, reached by that road or by the Awana SkyWay cable car, and cloud often rolls over the summit in the afternoon.

It is a hilltop town rather than a single hotel. Several properties share the site, including First World Hotel, long one of the largest hotels anywhere by room count. A theme park, arena, cinemas, food halls and a mall fill the levels between them, with the gaming floor in the main complex.

Okada sits on reclaimed land along Manila Bay, and the first thing guests see is The Fountain — a vast multicolour dancing fountain that runs choreographed shows each evening in front of the curved hotel building. Sunsets over the bay are the other daily event.

Inside, the resort has a glass-domed indoor-outdoor beach club with a wave pool, a long row of restaurants, a spa and a shopping arcade. The gaming floor is part of the main building. The airport is close, which makes it an easy first or last night in the city.
